• A woman began dabbling in magic.  Some girls were diagnosed as victims of malicious witchcraft
• Ministers believed New England was a holy place since the devil was interested in it
• 150 people were accused of witchcraft.  19 were hung. 
• One was crushed with a pile of stones
• The Salem Witch Trials were the subject of a play “The Crucible”

The Puritan Legacy

• Puritans began in England
• Original Puritans were Protestants who wanted to purify the Church of England
• They wanted a simple religious experience; they did not believe that clergy or government should dictate how individuals related to God

Puritan Beliefs: Sinners All?

• They believed Adam and Eve’s disobedience had doomed most people to hell
• God sent Jesus to save some people from this fate
• They spent much time examining their lives for signs of saving grace.
• They practiced discipline and hard work-the qualities needed for building a society

Puritan Politics: Government by Contract

• They believed God and mankind were bound by a covenant or contract
• They believed that people should make similar agreements among themselves
• The compact made on the Mayflower worked much like the American Constitution someday would
• They believed that people who were saved should govern and protect the community from evil.  It led to the Salem Witch Trials.

The Bible in America

• The Bible was the literal word of God
• They valued education.  Harvard College was founded as a school for ministers
• Puritans’ beliefs required them to keep a close watch on their spirtual lives

The Age of Reason: Thinkers and Experimenters

• Certain thinks known as rationalists believed humans could use reason to find truth
• Puritans saw God as active in human affairs
• Rationalists saw God as creating the universe, then left it to run on its own
• Americans had to be experimenters; they had to make do with what they had.

The Smallpox Plague

• April 1721, a ship from the West Indies docked in Boston carrying smallpox.  It spread rapidly and killed its victims
• C otton Mathers, a scientist, knew of a way to deal with smallpox. Inoculation had been developed in Turkey
• Doctors opposed inoculation because it was developed by a Muslim
• Mathers inoculated 300 people, only 6 died.  Inoculation worked.

Deism: Are People Basically Good?

• Rationalists believed that all people could discover God’s natural laws
• Deists believed people as basically good
• They believed people could use reason to perfect themselves and society
• Deism made concern for the common good one of the nation’s highest goals

Self-Made Americans

• Benjamin Franklin’s, The Autobiography, was a masterpiece of the American Age of Reason.
• Franklin’s work was not religious
• It told the story of a self-made American.  It became the model for classic American literature

4. Once you have the information, write your first draft on notebook paper.  It will be helpful to leave (Skip every other line) blank lines to give you room to add information or make changes to the first draft.
5. You will exchange drafts with your partner the following class period to read the sketch you have written.
6. With permission from your partner, you may add or make necessary changes in order to make the biographical sketch as clear as possible seeing that it is representative of who you are.
7. The second draft will then be ready to be written.  Again you may wish leave blank lines for corrections and changes when you work with other partners to peer edit the biographical sketch.
8. After the peer editing process is complete, you will be ready to write an additional draft.
9. This draft will be shared with the partner you originally interviewed.  If he /she have any suggestions for change they are responsible to make those changes know at that time.
10. Final Copy—You will type the biographical sketch using Times New Roman size 12 font and double spacing.

1. Page 1—Begin typing your final draft.  (For the biographical sketch, you must have at least one typed page but no more than two.  If you have more than the requirement, you must edit the biographical in order to fit the requirements as specified in the directions.
2. If you have more than one page, it will be necessary to include your last name and page numbers.  Go to insert. Click on Header and chose the one that is on the far right side of the paper that allows you to include your last name and the page number.

Note:  You should have at least five paragraphs. Paragraph 1 introduces the person.  Paragraphs 2-3-4 will highlight three of the most exciting or important things about the person interviewed. Paragraph 5 will conclude and recap on the exciting aspects of his/her life.

Rubric—This and all written assignments will graded using the West Virginia Rubric from the West Virginia State Department of Education.  You will be given the rubric and are expected to keep it for reference throughout the school year.  If you lose it, it will be your responsibility to go to my website and download another one.

Telling The Story: Interview the person sitting next to you. Feel free to add or skip any questions that you want. Take turns talking, jot down some notes, and prepare to write a biographical sketch about your partner.  Once you have the information required, you will write a one-page typed, double-spaced biography to introduce your partner to our class.

Logan High School

Course Work:

• All students are expected to listen and actively participate in all class work.
• Daily assignments will vary according to the content being studied.
• Each class will begin with a POD.  These will be taken up weekly; each POD will be worth 10 points each.  Note:  It has been my observation that PODs are considered not as important by many students; not doing them has a negative impact on grades.

Grades:

• All grades will be posted on Edline.  Each student, parent and/or guardian will have their own password and login information.  Make it a habit to check Edline often.  If a mistake is found or questions arise, my email address is mhawkins@access.k12.wv.us .  I check my messages often and respond accordingly.  Leave a message and your email address.
• Students should keep all graded / returned papers until the grading period ends.  If a mistake is made, that will expedite necessary corrections.

Late Work:

• It is the student’s responsibility to ask for missed assignments.
• Check the agenda for county policy governing make up work.
• Late work coupons may be used to turn in missing work using the following

guidelines.  Use them wisely.

• 1^st, 9 weeks=2 coupons                 Only good for 9 wks. in which issued.

• Profanity, fights, possession of alcohol or tobacco will result in removal from the classroom and action by an administrator.

Mobile Lab Computer Procedures

• Students are assigned a numbered computer and power cord.
• Use only the computer and power cord to which you are assigned.
• Only use the assigned or appropriate websites directed by the teacher.
• Near the end of class, listen to the teacher’s directions for putting the computers away.
• Place computers back into the cabinet in the correct number slots along with the numbered power cord.
• Immediately inform the teacher of any problems/concerns with any computer.

Class Dismissal

• The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher will dismiss you according to the row in which you are sitting.

Agenda:

• Each student will be given one agenda at the beginning of the school year.  Please read through it; it contains a wealth of information to help students be successful at Logan High School.

Major / Important Assignments:

1.     Junior Research:

• October 17-21, 2011 in the library for research on chosen topic.
• November 7-10, 2011 word processing of research paper, bibliography, and all final materials.
• All materials are due on November 10, 2011.
• There are a lot of students a Logan High School and many assignments must be completed on assigned dates.  Please make every effort to be present and ready to work on the assigned computer task(s).
• The junior research paper will be completed using MLA notation and documentation of sources.
• No late coupons will be accepted for research assignments.  Those dates are set and cannot be changed.

2.     Writing Roadmap dates are TBA

Materials:

• It will be beneficial to you to purchase a flash drive to store all research and typed materials.
• A folder with pockets will enhance organization skills.  English assignments only are to be included in the folder.
• If you want hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, or tissues, you may bring them for the class to use.
