Class Requirements

Course:  Public Speaking

Course Description:  The course is required for all tenth grade students.  It is designed to improve communication skills through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Additionally, students will practice skills to improve their Westest scores.

Prerequisite: None

Course Objectives:

  • Improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Investigate different forms of language such as: jargon, dialect, connotation, denotation, euphemisms, aphorisms, idioms, clichés, etc.
  • Recognize and use various figures of speech
  • Improve grammar, writing, and reading skills to become more effective communicators
  • Practice Westest related questions
  • Develop writing skills using the writing process
  • Learn and use sentence combining techniques
  • Write essays using given criteria (informative, persuasive, descriptive, expository)
  • Expand vocabulary
  • Compose / write in multiple genres

Evaluations:

  • Rubrics, checklists, and criteria sheets to evaluate writing tasks
  • Class participation (independently and / or cooperative)
  • POD (Problem of the Day)  (10 points / day)

Grade Policy—Check your agenda for the policy adopted by Logan County Schools.

Class Behavior:

  • Be prompt.  Once I close the door, you are tardy. 
  • Be prepared.  Pencils (must be sharpened), paper, and other material must be ready when you enter classroom. You will not be permitted to go to your locker for needed assignments once class begins.
  • Be quiet and polite.
  • Pay attention to class discussions.
  • Participate in all class activities.
  • No hats are to be brought into the classroom.
  • Do not touch anything on my desk without permission.
  • No cell phones are to be out or used during class.

Agenda:

Write down what we will be doing in class each day in your agenda.  Refer to all policies, rules, and requirements.
